Colombia – Guayabero Rio

After an unforgettable week on Colombia’s Tomo River in 2025, Jeff Ehlert extended his stay to explore the remote Guayabero River in search of the legendary Payara (also known as Vampire Fish). What he found was nothing short of magical: wild Amazonian waters, a truly off-the-grid experience, and some of the most thrilling fishing of his life!

Now, we’re inviting a select few to join us on this exclusive hosted trip to one of Colombia’s most protected fisheries from February 6-13, 2026.

Payara

Guayabero Rio February 6-13, 2026.

Your cost is $2,900/person (based on 3 anglers per guide).

Trip Highlights

  • Dates: February 6–13, 2026

  • Location: Guayabero River, Colombian Amazon

  • Species Targeted: Payara (Vampire Fish), Dorado Catfish, and Yellow Catfish

  • Group Size: Limited to 6 anglers only

  • Price: $2,900 per person — includes all in-country flights!

Originally limited to just 4 anglers due to strict conservation regulations, our local partners in Bogotá, Manuel and Camilo, successfully negotiated access for a total of 6 — making this a rare and intimate opportunity.

Expect a comfortably rustic experience deep in the Amazon, filled with great fishing, warm hospitality, and surprisingly delicious food. As Jeff put it:

“The fishing was spectacular, the food was incredible, and I don’t even drink coffee — but down there, I drank all I could get!”

Guayabero River: Fishing in the Heart of the Colombian Wilderness!

The Guayabero River is a remote and largely unexplored destination, ideal for anglers seeking a true wilderness experience. Originating in the Andes and flowing through savannas and dense jungle, it forms one of Colombia’s most biodiverse ecosystems, home to pink dolphins, giant otters, turtles, payaras, and large catfish.

With strong currents and rocky structures, the river offers challenging fishing conditions. The expedition begins in Bogotá and continues to La Macarena, Meta. From there, a boat takes guests upstream to a strategically located riverside camp.

Accommodations include an open-air lodge with river views, private tents, shared bathrooms, dining facilities, satellite internet, and a varied menu. Fishing is done from large, stable boats guided by experienced local captains, with frequent opportunities to fish from shore or in the water. The climate is favorable, and mosquitoes are rarely an issue.

The river is known for its payara (or “vampire fish”), prized for their strength and explosive strikes. Massive catfish—surubí, yellow, golden, and redtail—are also abundant. During baitfish migrations, feeding frenzies can make for intense fishing sessions.

Our all-inclusive package starts and ends in Bogotá and covers all transport, meals, lodging, insurance, boats, and more. Fishing gear is not included; we recommend 9 to 11-weight rods with floating, intermediate, and sinking lines. Large streamers and poppers on 4/0 to 6/0 hooks are most effective.
